Seattle teachers join movement to boycott new standardized tests

SEATTLE — A group of Seattle teachers will join the movement to boycott new common core standardized tests Tuesday.

The teachers, students and parents are opposed to the idea of teaching specifically to pass a test, so the students are refusing to take the new Smarter Balanced test.

That testing is being used in the Seattle School District, but it was delayed at Garfield High School, where teachers and parents are leading the charge, though other schools in the district are part of the movement, too, including Nathan Hale and Franklin high schools.

Last year, the Seattle School District tracked numbers of students who refused the exam. Twenty sophomores at Garfield opted out of the reading test and a dozen opted out of the writing test.

This year, the district is estimating the number will be closer to 150, but official numbers won't be released until early summer.

The group Seattle Opt Out is holding a news conference Tuesday at 4 p.m. to explain their reasoning behind the strong opposition.
