SeattleInsider: Scooter gang revs engine for kids in need

SEATTLE, Wash. — Big hearts, a scooter club and hundreds of backpacks, will be headed north on Highway 99 this Sunday.

Soldiers of Destiny, a Seattle scooter club, is joining forces for the 2nd annual "Big Hearts & Backpacks" program benefiting Safe Place in Everett.

Their scooter club's mantra is, “We believe riding scooters was something we were destined to do.”

And this weekend they are destined for a heck-of-a-ride as they will each wear a pack on their back and make a delivery to kids in need.

Safe Place is a program run by Hand in Hand Kids that provides a secure place for kids who have been removed from their homes.

In many cases these kids have been removed from their homes in the middle of the night with their belongings thrown into a garbage bag.

"We hated the thought that these kids felt thrown away like trash and wanted to give as many of them as we could a backpack of their own to hold their things," said club member Justin Barnes.

The scooter club has collected well over 100 backpacks and $3,000 so far, thanks to the generous support of the community.

They will head to Everett at 9 a.m. on Sunday, and anyone and everyone is encouraged to hop on two wheels and join the cause.
