Several crosswalks in Seattle's Central District painted red, green and black

SEATTLE — The Seattle Department of Transportation is determining what to do after several crosswalks in the Central District were painted red, green and black.

The painted crosswalks are along Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

The colors represent the Pan-African Flag.

Residents in the neighborhood told KIRO 7 there is a safety concern, and some residents supported the artistic expression.

An official with SDOT released this statement on the crosswalk:

"While we are supportive of community building activities, we must ensure that the city's crosswalks remain recognizable and safe. We are reviewing what action should be taken."

In June, Mayor Ed Murray unveiled Rainbow crosswalks in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood in celebration of Pride.

Eleven rainbow crosswalks were paid for with developer fees.
