TACOMA, Wash. — You might recognize the house from the cult classic movie “10 Things I Hate About You” – the 1999 rom-com/drama starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles.

Now you can buy that house – if you have $1.6 million.

The house where much of the movie was shot just went on sale. It's located at 2715 N. Junett Street in Tacoma. Many other scenes in the movie were shot at Stadium High School in Tacoma, which is just a couple of miles away from the house.

The family in the house has been living there for 30 years.

“In the 1990’s they were approached by producers and let the movie crew move in, and for 6 months they actually had to relocate,” said the realtor, Jeff Jensen.

Jensen says since the children are grown and gone now, the parents decided the five-bedroom 3 1/2-bath 5,760-square-foot home is simply too big for them.

“It’s actually been a very emotional process,” Jensen said. “This house is very dear to their hearts.”

Jensen said that, even five years ago, the home likely would’ve been listed at $1 million or less. But Tacoma’s hot housing market means home prices are skyrocketing – now at a rate faster than in Seattle.

A 2017 Redfin study showed that, in Tacoma, 52 percent of homes sold for above the asking price, which ranks the city as the fifth-hottest housing market in the U.S.

“It’s happening. We never experienced that. We heard about it in Seattle, we heard about it King Countyand now we’re actually experiencing it here,” Jensen said.

"It's happening. We never experienced that. We heard about it in Seattle, we heard about it King County and now we're actually experiencing it here," Jensen said.
Home prices that won't stop climbing in  Seattle and the suburbs is pushing people to look for houses farther from where they work.

The first family KIRO7 approached in Tacoma said they were in that exact situation.

“I'd love to live in Burien, but it's just not realistic. The prices are ridiculous actually over there,” said Sheilah Hermono, who works in Burien. Her significant other works in Seattle.

She says even in the Tacoma area, they’ve struggled to buy.

“We’ve gotten to a house where we're really, really close, punching in numbers, then the next few hours our realtor said it's not available,” Hermono said.

Jensen says he expects the hot market to continue.

“We are, we are,” he said. “We don't anticipate any slowdown. There's too much job creation, too much migration into Pierce County,” he said.

He says the “10 Things” house likely won’t sell as fast as others in the neighborhood – it’s a very unique 1907 Victorian. He says on average in Pierce County, homes sell in 30 days.
