All mainline SB lanes of I-5 in Tacoma reopen after fatal crash

(WSDOT)

TACOMA, Wash. — All lanes of southbound I-5 near Pacific Avenue in Tacoma have been reopened after a fatal crash.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Johnna Batiste said an initial investigation indicated a minivan driver who was exiting off south I-705 to south I-5 cut the gore point and struck a motorcyclist on the side of the road.

A second vehicle was also struck as the van tried to change lanes.

Batiste said the motorcyclist died at the scene and the driver of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The minivan driver was taken into custody for investigation of driving under the influence, Batiste said.

Traffic was backed up for miles and was diverted to State Route 16 and 38th Street.

The crash is under investigation.
