SPANAWAY, Wash. — A Spanaway food bank that serves hundreds of people was damaged in an early Friday morning fire.
The fire happened in the main building at the Spanaway FISH Food Bank on A Street South.
The food bank’s director, Harrold Smith, told KIRO 7 a lot of dry goods and a food prep for Friday’s distribution were in that building.
"We don’t know the loss yet on the food. There's going to be a lot of loss,” Smith said.
The food bank distributes 15,000 pounds of food a month and serves 300 families a month, which is about 1,100 people.
Smith said the bank has partnered with the Emergency Food Network in Lakewood and is working with it to come up with a viable way for people to get food.
“This time of year, it's tough. It's a busy time of year. There's a lot of need. We take care of a lot more people,” Smith said.
The fire marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire.
“That’s our main goal now is to figure out how we're going to feed the folks that come to this food bank. So we're working on that, and we'll make it happen,” Smith said.
