MASON COUNTY, Wash. — One person is dead after a head-on crash involving two cars Wednesday afternoon near Shelton, the Washington State Patrol said.
Law enforcement said one car was southbound on State Route 3 at milepost 3.5 when it crossed over into the northbound lane and struck the other car.
The State Patrol said an 82-year-old woman driving a black Ford Focus, headed north, died while being taken by medics to Harborview Medical Center.
The driver of a Chevrolet Geo Metro headed south suffered injuries and was taken to nearby Mason General Hospital, officials said.
Both directions of the highway were fully blocked.
Southbound traffic was diverted to East Johns Prairie Road, while traffic going north was diverted to North Pine/South Front Street.
The road was reopened after a few hours.
Washington State Patrol did not say if drugs and alcohol were involved in the crash, but said charges are pending.
