Search underway for man involved in West Olympia shooting

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Police are searching for a man involved in a shootout in West Olympia that sent two men to the hospital.

Olympia police released surveillance video that captured the shooting. The video is clear and shows the men exchanging gunfire only a few feet from several apartment and condo complexes in the 1000 block of Fern Street Southwest.

Olympia police confirmed Wednesday that they were looking for 32-year-old Curtis Rudolph and that he was involved in the shooting.

When officers arrived, they found two men outside a house who had been shot. It was the Rudolph family's home, their fence still has bullet holes and impact craters.

Police say two men came to Rudolph's home, but it is unknown why. They said Rudolph had a gun and shot a man, who had a leg injury. That man returned fire at Rudolph, but hit Rudolph's brother, Tyrone.

The two who were shot are expected to survive.

After the shootout, Rudolph fled the scene.

KIRO 7 went to the scene.

A woman answered the door, looked at Rudolph’s picture and said, “That’s my son.”

Rudolph’s mother spoke to KIRO 7's Ranji Sinha about what happened Monday night that has police looking for her son.

“I'm like, OK, this is real, this is not a TV movie, this is real, but it played out like something in a TV movie,” she said.

“To have something like this happen on your doorstep, not with one son but with two sons, it's very challenging...emotionally...to try to keep your sanity.”

Rudolph’s mother said she has one son injured, the other one wanted by police, so she has some blunt motherly advice. When KIRO 7 asked her if her son should turn himself in, “Absolutely if he did this, if he did something wrong I absolutely…(my sons) they’re grown, if they do something wrong they need to stand their own ground, and 'fess up.”

Rudolph is wanted for first-degree assault for his involvement in the shooting. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Olympia Police Department at 360-753-8300. Anyone who sees Rudolph should not confront him and call 911.
