TACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma City Council is taking steps to prevent internet service providers from selling your personal information.
The council voted for a resolution barring the city's Click! Cable TV service from doing that.
What the council voted in potentially protected the internet and private history for some 23,000 people who use the cable TV provider in Tacoma.
They’re now hoping state legislators can step up with a more comprehensive bill to cover the entire state.
The resolution says the two internet providers leasing space on Click! Cable TV's wires must get permission before getting or selling a customer's personal information.
It also says those providers, Advanced Stream and Rainier Connect, can't deny service to people who don’t give permission.
The resolution came about after President Trump overturned Obama-era internet privacy protection and it was argued in Washington, DC.
In Olympia, there are two bills winding through the statehouse to require internet service providers to get that same permission statewide.
Legislators only have several more days in the current legislative session left.
Our partners at The News Tribune report the state currently doesn't have a law preventing ISP's from selling customer information.
