Tests clear Penn Cove mussels; harvesting to resume

COUPEVILLE, Wash. — Penn Cove mussel harvesting will resume this weekend after test results came back on Friday, the General Manager of Penn Cove Shellfish said.

Sensory testing by NOAA shows mussels from the site near where a fishing vessel sank are OK, said Ian Jefferds in an email to KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

The derelict ship that shut down shellfish harvesting in the cove was towed this week to Seattle to be scrapped.

The Deep Sea arrived at the Ballard Locks in Seattle on Wednesday. It will be dismantled at a Ballard shipyard.

The 140-foot ship caught fire and sank May 12, leaking fuel. A crane barge raised it on Sunday.
