According to KPIX-TV, Roberts, 38, was in his grandmother's Richmond backyard Wednesday evening when a shooter opened fire, relatives said. Richmond police Sgt. Enrik Melgoza confirmed the death to CNN.
Police have not arrested anyone in connection with his death, the Mercury News reported. Melgoza told CNN that witnesses saw Roberts stumble into the backyard after an unspecified disturbance in the garage. The shooter fled before authorities arrived, CNN reported.
Roberts, an El Cerrito High School and Oregon State University alum, joined the Bengals in 2003, playing defensive back until his release two years later, according to the news outlets.
