ROUND ROCK, Texas — A former "teacher of the year" is facing a felony charge after authorities said she engaged in sex acts with a student in her Texas classroom.
According to KXAN-TV, Randi Chaverria, 36, of Round Rock, was booked at the Williamson County Jail on Tuesday and charged with having an improper relationship with a student. The ex-Round Rock High School teacher, who turned herself in, was released on $25,000 bond later that day, jail records said.
The student alleged that "Chaverria called him and had sexual contact with him" multiple times this fall, KXAN reported. The then-family science teacher had oral sex with him in her classroom two times, he told authorities.
The Round Rock school district said Chaverria resigned Nov. 19, a day after officials learned of the allegations, KVUE-TV reported.
The news came about 18 months after the district named her secondary teacher of the year, according to KXAN.
