Miracle Mineral Solution hoax: FDA warns consumers to avoid products

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday issued a warning to consumers not to drink sodium chlorite products like Miracle Mineral Solution over concerns the product, which is essentially industrial bleach, can cause serious and potentially deadly health problems.

Often marketed and sold online as a "miracle cure" for conditions like autism, cancer, hepatitis, influenza and HIV/AIDS, among others, the products are not FDA-approved and the agency is unaware of research suggesting the products are safe or effective for any kind of treatment.

On the contrary, “Using these products may cause you to delay other treatments that have been shown to be safe and effective,” the FDA reported.

Miracle Mineral Solution also goes by Master Mineral Solution, Miracle Mineral Supplement, MMS, Chlorine Dioxide (CD) Protocol and Water Purification Solution. The FDA, which first warned the public about these products in 2010, is once again urging consumers to refrain from purchasing or using them.

In some cases, the chlorine dioxide products have caused nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and severe dehydration. Packaging may suggest these reactions are all evidence the product is working, but that claim is false, according to health officials.

Severe reactions have ranged from severe diarrhea and vomiting to life-threatening low blood pressure and acute liver failure.

Anyone who has experienced a negative reaction to the products should refer to a health care professional as soon as possible.
