HEMET, Calif. — A pregnant California woman was killed Sunday night in a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver, who livestreamed the aftermath of the crash.
Marcos Forestal, 28, of Burbank, is charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to Riverside County jail records. The Cuba native is a World Boxing Federation title holder.
Krystil Kincaid, who was eight months pregnant, was initially expected to survive the crash, which ignited a fire in her Chrysler and left her pinned in the vehicle, Hemet police officials said. First responders were able to extinguish the blaze and extract Kincaid from the wreckage.
By Tuesday, however, both Kincaid, 29, of San Jacinto, and her unborn daughter were declared dead. Kincaid's husband, Zach Kincaid, told KTLA in Los Angeles that his wife was kept on a respirator until her organs could be harvested for donation.
Zach Kincaid said he was on speakerphone with his wife at the time of the collision. He told the news station that he heard his wife scream, and then he heard the sound of twisting metal.
He could also hear firefighters using the Jaws of Life to remove Krystil Kincaid from the wreckage.
Zach Kincaid said one of the worst parts of the ordeal was taking the couple’s four children to the hospital to say goodbye. The children thought they were going to welcome their baby sister into the world.
"They thought they had a baby sister here," Kincaid told KTLA. "They got the worst news of their life. They were told that they don't have a mom, or a baby sister, anymore."
He wrote on Facebook about having to tell his wife's two sons, ages 8 and 4, her 11-year-old daughter and 14-year-old stepdaughter, that a suspected drunken driver had killed her. He described it as the hardest thing he's ever had to do.
"The pain and anger I feel within my soul is immeasurable; my heart is broken," Kincaid wrote. "Until we meet again, Raven."
Krystil Kincaid's Facebook page is filled with photos of her husband and children. Her final post was on Aug. 27, her children's first day of school.
Forestal suffered minor injuries in the crash. He livestreamed the aftermath of the collision, showing his followers the wreckage of his BMW.
The video, which was later taken down, was shared by El Nuevo Herald, a Spanish-language newspaper based in southeast Florida. In the video, copies of which were still circulating on social media Thursday, Forestal tells his followers he had an accident.
“Look what happened to me, gentlemen,” a translation of the video indicates he said. “I got a car in the front and look what happened to my car.”
At that point in the video, an officer approaches Forestal and asks if he is all right before asking him to sit down and provide his identification.
Forestal's suggestion that Kincaid pulled out in front of him was incorrect, according to Hemet police officials. Traffic investigators said their preliminary investigation showed that Kincaid was driving north just after 8:30 p.m. when Forestal, who was driving south at a high rate of speed, veered into her lane.
"The investigation is ongoing and no further details will be released at this time," a statement from the department said.
Forestal showed signs of being intoxicated, so he was taken into custody, Hemet police officials said. He was initially charged with driving while intoxicated, causing a collision with major injuries.
The charges were upgraded when Kincaid and her unborn daughter died. Forestal is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond.
The boxer's manager, Christina Carrillo at JAB Management, told KTLA that the management company is cooperating fully with the investigation.
"I would like to extend my deepest condolences to those that have lost their loved ones in this horrible tragedy," Carrillo said.
