The ongoing battle between dog and cat lovers has intensified with the release of a study that shows dogs may be smarter than cats.
Researchers from Vanderbilt, UC Davis, the University of Richmond and international universities found a dog's cerebral cortex contains more than twice the neurons of a cat's brain.
The study says dogs have about 530 million cortical neurons while cats have about 250 million.
Neurons are cells associated with thinking, planning and complex behaviors, which strongly relate to intelligence.
For comparison, a human brain contains almost 30 times as many cortical neurons compared to a dog.
