According to WBBM-TV and WLS-TV, Orland Park police responded to the Orland Square Mall about 2 p.m. Tuesday after receiving several reports that a large object, such as shelves or a mirror, had fallen and struck a young child inside an Akira clothing store. The 2-year-old girl, whose name was not released, had been shopping with her aunt, police said.
Bystanders, including a nurse and a doctor, rushed to help the toddler until emergency crews arrived to take her to a nearby hospital, where the girl died, WLS reported.
In a statement, the Akira chain said it was "devastated by this tragic event" and "working to collect all the details," according to WLS. Meanwhile, the mall issued a statement expressing its "deepest sympathies" for the girl's family and directing all questions to Akira or Orland Park police, the news station reported.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
