ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. — A night of street racing turned deadly when a person was killed and two others were injured by cars doing stunts in separate incidents Thursday morning in Southern California.
Video shows a woman was injured when a car slammed into her while a driver was doing donuts around 1:30 a.m. in an Anaheim parking lot, KABC reported.
As the driver is performing the stunt, the car drifts into a woman standing nearby. She is flung into the air before landing on the asphalt. She was taken to a hospital where she is in stable condition, KABC reported.
The driver was later found and taken into custody. His identity and potential charges were not released.
Investigators said the area is known for being popular with street racers, and there were several hundred vehicles in the parking lot.
In Costa Mesa, about 100 street racers made their way to “takeover” an intersection around 2:30 a.m., police said.
Sergio Marroquian, 23, was killed when a car, driven by his cousin, flipped onto its side. A passenger was injured and taken to a hospital. Their condition is not known.
The driver, who was not identified, was arrested and charged with homicide, KABC reported.
A street takeover is when street racers overwhelm and block intersections so drivers can perform stunts. Costa Mesa has been the scene of multiple street takeovers in the last month. Participants have reportedly thrown rocks and bottles at authorities, as well as kicked their patrol vehicles during them, KABC reported.
