POINT LOOKOUT, N.Y. — A large mako shark was found on the Long Island coastline, with video showing the shark thrashing in the shallow water.
The Jones Beach Lifeguards Corps shared video of the shark on Twitter, saying it was spotted by a commercial fisherman at Point Lookout.
JBLC said in its post that the fisherman pulled over to help and contacted state environmental officials and the police, but by the time they showed up, the shark had managed to swim away.
Wildlife experts said they believe it was a mako shark and estimated the animal was 10 feet long, CBS News reported.
Mako sharks can grow up to 12 feet long and weigh at least 1200 pounds, according to Oceana.org. The mako is the fastest known species of shark, reaching speeds of up to 46 miles per hour, according to the Smithsonian. The mako is listed as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
