OLATHE, Kan. — Authorities charged an 18-year-old Olathe East High School student with one count of attempted capital murder on Saturday, one day after officials said he shot at a school resource officer, prompting a lockdown and evacuation of the school.
Officials charged Jaylon Elmore in connection to the shooting of school resource officer Erik Clark, according to jail records and KSHB-TV. Records from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office show bond in the case has been set at $1,000,000.
Police said Clark responded to the main office at Olathe East High School around 10:40 a.m. Friday for an unspecified administrative matter involving a student, later identified as Elmore.
“During the incident, the student produced a handgun and shots were exchanged between the student and the school resource officer,” police said Friday in a statement.
Elmore, Clark and a school administrator, identified by The Kansas City Star as assistant principal Kaleb Stoppel, were injured in the shooting and taken to a hospital for treatment of their injuries. Clark and Stoppel have since been released from Overland Park Regional Hospital, according to the Star. Elmore remained hospitalized Saturday in critical condition, the newspaper reported.
Court records show Elmore was previously arrested in 2020 on a charge of aggravated robbery out of Wyandotte County. The Star reported he was convicted of stealing a wallet from a person “by force or by threat of bodily harm, and did inflict bodily harm.” He was sentenced as a juvenile to serve six months of probation, which ended in July 2021, according to the Star and court records.
