Federal prosecutors on Monday announced charges against two men suspected of killing Run-DMC’s Jam Master Jay in 2002.
The pioneering D.J., who was born Jason Mizell, died October 30, 2002, when a masked assailant shot him at a recording studio in Queens, according to The Associated Press. He was 37.
Update 3:15 p.m. EDT Aug. 17: Federal court records show the men accused of killing Mizell, identified Monday as Karl “Little D” or “Noid” Jordan Jr. and Ronald “Tinard” Washington, are accused of killing the legendary D.J. while conspiring to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine.
Prosecutors announced indictments Monday against Jordan and Washington, who face charges of murder while engaged in narcotics trafficking and participating in a firearms-related murder.
Court records unsealed Monday show Jordan is also facing eight other cocaine-related charges from at least March 2017 to June 2017.
Update 3 p.m. EDT Aug. 17: Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Seth DuCharme confirmed Monday that two men are facing drug-related murder charges in the 2002 slaying of Mizell.
DuCharme identified the suspects as Ronald Washington, 36, and Karl Jordan Jr., 56.
“Mr. Jordan and Mr. Washington walked into a music studio in Queens where Mr. Mizell and others were working, essentially, and hanging out, and they walked in and murdered him in cold blood,” DuCharme said at a news conference Monday afternoon.
Police and federal authorities, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, worked together for years to solve the case, officials said.
“For the crime of murder the passage of time offers no escape,” DuCharme said. “We don’t give up on these cases.”
Jordan is scheduled to appear in court Monday by video conference for an arraignment. Washington, who is in prison for an unrelated robbery according to WABC-TV, will be arraigned at an unspecified date in the future, authorities said.

Unidentified law enforcement sources told The New York Times that two men long suspected of participating in Mizell’s death, Ronald Washington and Karl Jordan Jr., have been indicted on charges of murder while engaged in drug trafficking in connection with the 2002 shooting.
Jordan, 36, was taken into custody Sunday and is expected to be arraigned Monday, according to WABC-TV. Washington, 56, was in a federal prison Monday serving time for an unrelated robbery, the news station reported.
Mizell is survived by a wife and three children, according to the AP.
