Sgt. Monica Law said officers were dispatched to the Elyton Village public housing community after receiving a call of multiple people shot in the area, AL.com reported.
Police believe more than one shooter was involved, according to WTVM.
Officers arriving at the scene found three men suffering from gunshot wounds, WBRC-TV reported. All three were taken to an area hospital, where two of the men died from their injuries, the television station reported.
One man also has injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
“We do believe there are multiple suspects, none of which are in custody,’’ Law told AL.com.
Law added that it was unclear what the verbal dispute that led to the shooting was about, adding that an investigation was ongoing.
“I’m born and raised here in Birmingham, so it’s discouraging that this is continuing to happen in our city,’’ Law told the news outlet.
