The shooting happened around 9:15 a.m. at Gateway Village in Capitol Heights, WTTG reported. The complex is operated by National Church Residences and offers “an affordable rental community for seniors” aged 62 and older, according to its website.

In a statement posted online, Capitol Heights officials and town police said the shooting happened after a resident and property management staff got into an argument Friday morning. The resident opened fire, killing two of Gateway Village’s staff members, according to authorities.

“All other residents are safe and the county is taking the lead to care for their welfare until the police have completed their crime scene investigations at the building and the residents are allowed to return to their apartments,” officials said in the statement.

Residents told WJLA-TV that fire alarms went off Friday, prompting them to evacuate. Police initially asked that nearby residents shelter in place as they cleared the building. A nearby elementary school was also placed on lockdown as a precaution.

“On behalf of the National Church Residences team, please know that we are extremely heartbroken by the events that occurred this morning at our affordable housing property Gateway Village,” Michelle Norris, National Church Residences’ executive vice president, told CNN in a statement. “We are proud of the heroic and swift actions of our staff to ensure that our residents were protected and kept safe.”

Authorities continue to investigate.
