TULLY, N.Y. — More than 200 skiers were suspended in midair Sunday when a chair lift came to a halt at Song Mountain in New York state.
According to Syracuse.com, the incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at the popular ski destination in Tully. About 35 minutes later, a caller told Cortland County 911 dispatchers that at least 200 people were trapped on the lift in freezing temperatures, the news outlet reported.
Song Mountain Ski Patrol and Preble Fire Department crews responded to the scene and began to rescue the stranded skiers, Syracuse.com reported. By 4:30 p.m., everyone had been evacuated, according to WSYR-TV.
Song Mountain owner Peter Harris told WSYR that he didn’t know the cause of the problem and praised rescuers for their efforts.
“Everyone is down and safe and a little chilly, but we’re happy that it all worked exactly to plan,” he told the TV station.
