LITTLE BRITAIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Three children died Monday when a horse and buggy vehicle collided with a dump truck in Pennsylvania, authorities said.
Four other people were injured in the crash, which occurred around 8 a.m. in Little Britain Township, WGAL reported.
According to the Lancaster County Coroner Stephen Diamantoni, the three fatalities were juveniles -- a 15-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl, Lancaster Online reported. The children were siblings, the website reported.
The driver of the truck was not injured and remained on the scene, state police said.
“Upon investigation, it was determined a horse and buggy occupied by seven juveniles was traveling west on Black Road approaching the intersection with Little Britain Road North,” the Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement. “A tri-axle trash truck was traveling south on Little Britain Road North and operated by a single occupant. The horse and buggy failed to stop at a properly posted stop sign at the intersection and the buggy proceeded into the intersection. The truck struck the buggy along the right, passenger side. Three occupants of the buggy were pronounced deceased. The four additional occupants were all transported to Lancaster General Hospital and subsequently to Hershey Medical Center. The driver of the truck was not injured. He remained on scene and provided information to PSP.”
Buggies are common in Lancaster County, which has a large Amish population, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
According to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation data, there were 10 fatal buggy accidents between 2000 and 2019 -- seven occurred before 2009 and three from 2010 through 2019, Lancaster Online reported.
