HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. — A 1-year-old girl is recovering in a hospital after a 4-year-old shot her with an AR-15 rifle in Mississippi, authorities said.
According to WHBQ-TV, the incident occurred Sunday afternoon at a home on Ridgecrest Drive in Holly Springs. The older child somehow gained access to the .223-caliber AR-15 and shot the toddler, striking her in the hand, Holly Springs police said.
WHBQ reported that the 1-year-old, who is being treated at a hospital in nearby Memphis, Tennessee, is going to be OK, according to family members. They declined to comment further, according to the news outlet.
The toddler’s mother was not at home when the shooting occurred and had left her in her sister’s care, authorities said. Child protective services and police continue to investigate the case, WHBQ reported.
