LAKE CITY, Ga. — Authorities have arrested a woman suspected of animal hoarding after officials said they rescued 45 dogs and puppies and 11 cats and kittens from a flea-infested home in Lake City.
Robin Denese Pennington, 58, was booked July 8 into Clayton County Jail on a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, jail records show.
Officials with the Clayton County Police Department Animal Control Unit were called July 2 to respond to a complaint about animal hoarding at a home in the 1200 block of Trahlyta Terrace. Lake City police were also contacted to investigate, as the home fell in the department’s jurisdiction.
Authorities determined shortly after arriving that the “complaint was valid,” Clayton County police said. Animal control officers donned protective equipment to deal with “hazmat conditions,” which officials described as including “horrible odors, a flea infestation, and animal feces all over the home.”
Authorities said it took nearly seven hours for officials to process all the animals. Police said several of the dogs were suffering from mange and other severe health issues. The condition of the cats was not immediately known.
