André Leon Talley, fashion journalist and former Vogue editor at large, dead at 73

NEW YORK — Fashion journalist André Leon Talley, a former editor at large for Vogue magazine, has died at age 73, The Associated Press is reporting.

A post from Talley’s official Instagram account confirmed the news early Wednesday, saying the 6-foot-6 Talley died Tuesday in New York. The post did not say how he died.

“Mr. Talley was the larger-than-life, longtime creative director at Vogue during its rise to dominance as the world’s fashion bible,” the post read. “Over the past five decades as an international icon was a close confidant of Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, Paloma Picasso, Diane von Furstenberg, Bethann Hardison, Manolo Blahnik, and he had a penchant for discovering, nurturing and celebrating young designers.”

In addition to his work at Vogue, Talley wrote pieces for Vanity Fair, HG, Interview, Ebony and Women’s Wear Daily over the course of his career, according to the Instagram post. He also authored several books, including the best-selling “The Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir” published in 2020.

Well-known fashion designers and celebrities, such as Diane von Furstenberg, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Bob Mackie, took to social media to pay tribute to Talley. Here’s what they were saying:
