Arkansas brothers rescue younger sister from dog attack

BIGELOW, Ark. — Two brothers from Arkansas are being touted as heroes after they saved their 3-year-old sister from a dog attack last weekend.

The three siblings were at their grandmother’s house on Dec. 11 when two dogs attacked the trio, KARK-TV reported.

“It was the worst day of my entire life ever,” Brenda Hrubes told the television station about her grandchildren.

The dogs were unleashed pit bulls, KTHV-TV reported.

Six-year-old Declan Moore was attacked first, according to KARK.

“It felt like a million needles were poking me,” Moore told the television station.

His 10-year-old brother, Aiden Guzman, quickly took charge.

“Aiden told them all to run because he heard the dogs barking,” the children’s mother, Caitlin Mayo, told KTHV. “Declan fell behind. The dogs got Declan. Aiden heard the dogs getting Declan and heard Declan screaming so he ran back, pushed the dogs off of Declan, and told Declan to run.”

Moore picked up his sister, Annsley, and ran home, KARK reported.

“He was laying in the street and the owner was already dragging one of the dogs away, but the other was just chewing him up,” Hrubes told the television station.

Mayo said Guzman received 41 stitches, but he was released from an area hospital on Wednesday, KTHV reported.

“His left leg, there was 19 total spaces or injuries that they had to sew up. His right arm, there was 11 total that had to be sewn up. And then we counted the rest of the big ones that we could remember,” Mayo told the television station.

Moore needed 11 stitches and was released the day of the attack, KARK reported.

“His recovery is just antibiotics and working that leg out,” Mayo told KTHV.

“I just felt them biting me. I felt like I was frozen,” Moore told the television station. “I felt like I was gonna die.”

Moore said his older brother was a hero for saving him and his sister.

“That was really nice. I wish I could have took all the bites,” he added.

“He risked his life to save them,” Mayo told KTHV.

The family started a GoFundMe to help pay for medical bills. As of Sunday afternoon, more than $11,000 had been pledged.

Mayo said she plans on taking legal action against the dog owners, KTHV reported.
