Oscar Alejandro Hernandez, 29, was discovered near the merry-go-round in the east end of Griffith Park, his relatives told KNBC-TV. Family members were at the scene when emergency crews retrieved Hernandez’s body from the park’s steep terrain, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Hernandez’s dog, King, was described by authorities as tired and hungry, KNBC reported. The dog apparently had not left Hernandez’s side for two weeks, the television station reported.

According to a missing person flyer posted by Hernandez’s family, he was last seen near the merry-go-round hiking trails, an area described as “steep” by firefighters, KNBC reported.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Hernandez was driving a red 2004 Ford Explorer with California license plates when he was last seen at 2:30 a.m. PDT on March 16, the Canyon News reported.
