Police were called to the home early Friday morning after family members went to the property to do a wellness check on family who hadn’t been heard from in days, KYW-TV reported. The person who went inside found blood and called police.

Officers who responded to the home made the “gruesome, tragic discovery of a dead body in a freezer box in the basement,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small told WCAU. The officers saw blood leading down the basement stairs, as well as more blood around the icebox and a bloody knife.

Investigators described the victim as a male, curled up and face down in the freezer with a bag over his head, WPVI reported.

Police did not say how the man died or identify him. Officers confirmed to WTXF that they took a person of interest into custody, but no charges have been filed.

Police said there was no sign of forced entry at the property, KYW-TV reported.
