CINCINNATI — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Cincinnati intercepted three shipments of suspected fake AirPods valued at roughly $7.16 million.
The large shipments – en route from China to a Dayton, Kentucky address - contained tens of thousands of earbuds in violation of Apple Inc.’s protected configurations, and the contraband was officially seized on May 11 and May 13. Specifically, the shape and design of the counterfeit earbuds replicated the “protected Apple configuration,” the CBP stated in a news release.
According to the agency, each shipment contained 12,000 fake AirPods, for a total of 36,000.
Although each package had a declared value of $5,280, the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price for all the AirPods would have been $7.16 million had they been genuine, the CBP stated.
