MERCED, Calif. — A 10-year-old California boy died after a fight with another juvenile while playing basketball at a trampoline park, authorities said.
Anthony Duran died from injuries he sustained during the April 12 encounter at the Rockin’ Jump trampoline park in Merced, according to a news release from the Merced Police Department. Police said they were notified of the boy’s death on Monday.
According to police, witnesses said Duran got into a brief altercation with the other child while playing basketball inside the park, The Fresno Bee reported. Duran collapsed as a result of the encounter and the other juvenile fled from the scene on foot, according to the newspaper.
Bystanders began performing CPR on Duran until first responders arrived, according to KFSN-TV. The boy was taken to an area hospital and died from his injuries, the television station reported.
According to the police news release, the incident was captured on security camera at the Rockin’ Jump. Detectives viewed the footage and obtained statements from 35 people, including staff members, parents and children at the scene.
Detectives said they identified the other youth involved in the altercation and have contacted the juvenile’s parents, the release stated.
An autopsy by the Merced County Coroner’s Office is being conducted to determine Duran’s cause of death, KFSN reported.
Police said an investigation is ongoing, and the Merced County District Attorney’s Office will determine if any charges will be filed, The Bee reported.
