HAZLETON, Pa. — An 8-year-old boy’s television viewing habits helped him save his sister’s life.
Jaxson Dempsey, 8, realized his sister was choking on a chicken nugget while they were riding in their dad’s car, WNEP reported.
First, he told his dad to pull over, then he jumped into action, doing the same thing he saw on the show “The Substitutes.”
He hit her on the back until the nugget came out, he told WNEP.
He told WBRE it took about 30 seconds for it to pop out.
One episode of the Nickelodeon show featured John Cena, who demonstrated how to help someone when they’re choking.
Matt Dempsey told WNEP that he wasn’t surprised his son helped save his daughter.

“He amazes us every day, you know — some of the things he says and does, and his actions. We’re simply blessed to have the child that he is, the things he does for his family, his friends, for his little sister. He’s a good big brother,” the elder Dempsey told the television station.
Days after Jaxson’s heroics, he was honored with a parade through his neighborhood. Hazelton’s streets were filled with more than a dozen fire trucks with their lights and sirens blazing.
His school’s PTA also honored Jaxson for his quick thinking, WBRE reported.
Jaxson also had a message for Cena if he had a chance to meet him in person.
“I would say thank you for being on that show and for teaching me how to save someone’s life,” Jaxson told WBRE.
