Buffalo police officers no longer required to wear name on badge

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Out of concern for officer safety, the Buffalo Police Department made a change to its dress code policy — officers are no longer required to wear their name on their badge.

Officers will still have to wear their badge number as part of the changes implemented about a week ago, WKBW reported.

Buffalo police officers covered their name tags during a protest in August, WKBW reported. At the time, department policy mandated officers' “uniforms to be worn properly. Name tags must always be displayed on the outer most garment.”

The police union had been working on the changes since August.

Critics oppose the move as an effort to create less transparency.
