NEW YORK — Matt Shultz, the lead singer of the two-time Grammy Award-winning band Cage the Elephant, was detained in New York City on a weapons charge, authorities said.

Shultz, 39, was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a loaded firearm and two charges of criminal possession of a weapon, the New York Police Department confirmed to Rolling Stone and CBS News.

Police said the loaded weapons were allegedly found in the singer’s room at the Bowery Hotel in Lower Manhattan, according to Rolling Stone.

According to a report, the weapons were a Sig Sauer and a Smith & Wesson.

A representative for Cage The Elephant did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment.

Cage the Elephant has won a pair of Grammy Awards, according to Variety. The band won best album for 2015′s “Tell Me I’m Pretty” and 2019′s “Social Cues.”

The band’s 2013 album “Melophobia,” which features the songs “Come a Little Closer” and “Cigarette Daydreams,” was nominated for best alternative music album, Variety reported.

The group most recently performed at the Wonderfront Music & Arts Festival in San Diego on Nov. 20, 2022, according to the entertainment news website.

Shultz formed the band in 2006 with his older brother, Brad Shultz, along with Jared Champion, Daniel Tichenor and Lincoln Parish, according to Variety. Parish left the group in 2013.
