California mail dump in salon parking lot caught on surveillance video

GLENDALE, Calif. — Authorities in Glendale, California, were a little perplexed when they found several bags of discarded, unopened mail in an alley Thursday morning, but a call about two hours later shed a little light – and video – on the situation.

Glendale Police Department Sgt. Christian Hauptmann told KTLA that the first incident was investigated at around 7:30 a.m., and then officers received a call from 7Q Spa Laser & Aesthetics located about one mile from the first dump site.

Lilia Serobian, co-owner of the salon, told KCAL that she found the bags and took cell phone video once she realized they were filled with hundreds of unopened U.S. Postal Service envelopes and packages.

“It was completely unusual,” Serobian said. “If they’re taking for their personal use, basically, why’d they have to drop off all the unopened packages somewhere.”

Fortunately, surveillance video captured footage of someone tossing the bags of unopened mail from a rented truck before speeding away.

“It happened early in the morning, 5:40, and it was a Budget rental — big truck — that backed up to the parking lot. And they’re like, slowly, one by one, they’re dropping the packages,” Serobian told KTLA.

According to Glendale police, Postal Service investigators will try to determine from which post office — and specifically what route— the mail originated, as well as who rented the truck, the TV station reported.

It was not immediately clear if the two incidents involved the same rented truck, and KCAL confirmed a postal employee was dispatched to both locations to collect the discarded items.
