According to the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, the man had originally stopped to help a woman who flagged him down for assistance, KTXL-TV reported.

The 33-year-old victim called authorities at about 10:55 p.m. PST and was met by deputies approximately 10 miles south of Yuba City and 42 miles north of Sacramento, KCRA-TV reported.

Deputies discovered that the man had been assaulted and burned, according to KXTL. Emergency personnel took the man to an area hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

According to deputies, the victim stopped when he was flagged down by a woman standing next to a black SUV, KCRA reported. When he approached the vehicle, two men allegedly got out of the vehicle. One was armed with a gun and the other had a knife, the man told deputies.

The victim said his legs were zip-tied, then the men poured gasoline on him and lit the liquid before stealing his wallet and vehicle, according to KCRA.

The victim was able to extinguish the flames by rolling on the ground, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies found the man’s vehicle several miles away, according to KCRA. A replica firearm was found at the site.

No arrests have been made. The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing.
