Canyon Furniture Company has recalled about 1,200 children’s chests of drawers because they pose a serious tip-over threat that can lead to serious injury or death to children.
In a July 8 news release from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Canyon Furniture, located in Seffner, Florida, recalled the Creekside Children’s chests of drawers that were available exclusively at Rooms To Go.
The dressers do not comply with furniture industry standards, which state that a dresser should remain upright when a 50-pound weight is hung on a single drawer, according to Consumer Reports.
The recalled pieces of furniture are unstable if they are not anchored to a wall, posing tip-over and entrapment hazards for children, the CPSC said in its news release.
The dressers were sold in charcoal and chestnut colors and have five drawers, the CPSC said. They were sold between April 2020 and March 2021 for about $430. The products measure about 43.5 inches tall, 31.5 inches wide and 18 inches deep. A label on the back of the dressers says “Canyon Furniture Co,” along with an SKU number and the production date.
There have been no reported incidents or injuries linked to the recalled dressers, the CPSC said in its release. However, the agency recommended that consumers stop using them immediately and contact Rooms To Go for a free repair, replacement or store credit. The company also will pick up the furniture free of charge.
According to Consumer Reports, removing the furniture is the more desirable option.
“The best option for most recalls -- including this one -- is for the product to be removed from homes and returned to the manufacturer,” said Gabe Knight, a policy analyst for the magazine.
Consumers can call Rooms To Go at 855-688-0919, email the company at productcare@roomstogo.com, or go to the recall page on the company’s website.
