According to Ealy, Mooney died of a heart attack, Martin wrote.

Mooney was born Paul Gladney on Aug. 4, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and is best known for his portrayal of singer Sam Cooke in “The Buddy Holly Story,” as well as his appearances on “Chappelle’s Show” and as a longtime writer for comedian Richard Pryor.

Cassandra Williams, Mooney’s rep, confirmed the pioneering actor, writer and comic’s passing at around 5:30 a.m. to The Hollywood Reporter, noting a statement from the family is “forthcoming.”

Mooney’s TV writing credits included “Samford & Son,” “Good Times,” “In Living Color” and the short-lived “The Richard Pryor Show,” THR reported.
