FAIRFIELD, Ct. — A 15-year-old Connecticut boy died Saturday night following a birthday party shooting at banquet hall in Fairfield, police confirmed.
First responders found the unresponsive boy in the hall just after 10:30 p.m. EDT and began life-saving measures, but he died a short while later at an area hospital, WFSB-TV reported.
Police identified the boy Sunday as Zion Burton of Bridgeport, WTNH reported.
Burton would have turned 16 on Friday, police stated in a news release confirming the boy’s death.
The banquet hall had been rented for a 13-year-old’s birthday party with between 150 and 200 people in atttendance, WFSB reported.
“On behalf of Chief Robert Kalamaras and the entire Fairfield Police Department, we offer our most sincere condolences to Zion’s family. Our investigators are working diligently, pursuing several leads to apprehend the person(s) responsible,” the Fairfield Police Department wrote in a news release issued Sunday night.
Meanwhile, police said that a woman, whose age was not immediately available, also arrived at an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the jaw and has since been released, WTNH reported.
According to investigators, a physical altercation broke out at the party, and a single gunshot was heard, which caused several people to spill out into the street. Police confirmed that both victim were struck by the same bullet, WTNH reported.
Police confirmed to WFSB that the suspect knew Burton and called the shooting “isolated.”
The suspect, who has not been identified publicly, remained at large Sunday evening, WTNH reported.
