Coronavirus: 7-month-old tests positive for COVID-19 after death, NJ health officials say

A 7-month-old baby who died recently tested positive for COVID-19 after death, according to health officials in New Jersey.

Health Commissioner Judy Persichilli said Wednesday at a news conference that it remained unclear whether the child died of complications related to the novel coronavirus.

"Sadly, today, we are reporting the death of a 7-month-old baby who after death tested positive for COVID-19," Persichilli said.

“However, we do not know the primary cause of this death at this point in time. For privacy reasons, the department is not releasing any further information on this tragic loss. Our thoughts are with the family.”

As of Wednesday, more than 183,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported across New Jersey, resulting in 1,853 deaths, according to state health officials.

The United States leads the world with the most coronavirus cases and the highest death toll. Since the start of the pandemic, officials have confirmed more than 4.7 million infections and reported more than 157,000 deaths nationwide, according to numbers compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

More than 18.6 million COVID-19 cases have been reported worldwide and more than 702,000 people have died of the viral infection, according to Johns Hopkins.
