Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus eclipsed 90 million infections worldwide on Sunday, resulting in more than 1.9 million deaths to date, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.
The United States, which surpassed 22 million cases on Saturday, accounts for roughly one-quarter of the global total, while India – the second-most infected nation – confirmed less than half the U.S. total on Sunday with nearly 10.6 million cases. Brazil follows closely behind with nearly 8.1 million cases.
Meanwhile, both Russia and the United Kingdom have each reported more than 3 million COVID-19 cases, while France, Turkey, Italy and Spain have confirmed at least 2 million cases each. The eight other countries which have reported at least 1.1 million cases include Germany, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Iran, South Africa and Ukraine.
Closer to home, Illinois on Sunday became the fifth U.S. state to surpass 1 million COVID-19 infections, joining the ranks of California with nearly 2.7 million cases and nearly 30,000 deaths; Texas with nearly 2 million cases and more than 30,000 deaths; Florida with nearly 1.5 million cases and nearly 23,000 deaths; and New York with more than 1.1 million cases and nearly 40,000 deaths.
Meanwhile, 10 states have recorded at least half a million COVID-19 infections, including Ohio, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arizona, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and New Jersey.
