Country singer Doug Supernaw dies of cancer

HOUSTON — Country music star Doug Supernaw died of multiple cancers, his record label announced Friday. He was 60.

Supernaw, who hit No. 1 on the Billboard country charts with songs such as “Reno," “I Don’t Call Him Daddy” and “Not Enough Hours in the Night” during the 1990s, had been battling lung and bladder cancer for nearly two years, his Gold Record label said on the singer’s Facebook page.

Supernaw was placed in hospice care in October, KHOU reported.

“Doug was a mainstay of country music in the ’90s,” Supernaw’s Gold Record label said in a statement. “After an almost twenty-year hiatus from the music scene, Doug was looking to record and perform live again.”

Supernaw was born Sept. 26, 1960, in Bryan, Texas, and grew up in northwest Houston, KTRK reported. He excelled in sports at Eisenhower High School and earned a golf scholarship at the University of St. Thomas before dropping out to play music in the late 1970s, the Houston Press reported in 2007.

His first charted single was “Red and Rio Grande,” KTRK reported. He went on to place 11 singles on Billboard’s Hot 100 country charts.

Several country artists shared tributes on social media.

“Doug Supernaw has gone home ... rest easy brother,” The Oak Ridge Boys, tweeted.

“I’m sad today for the loss of my friend Doug Supernaw," country singer Doug Stone tweeted. "He went to be with Jesus early this morning. Cissy, Jade and I will be here for you. Whatever you need! This one hurts.”
