HOUSTON — Screeners at a Texas airport security checkpoint were surprised to find an extra ingredient hidden inside a traveler’s breakfast burrito -- crystal meth.

Transportation Security Administration agents noticed a strange lump in a breakfast burrito inside a traveler’s carry-on luggage during a routine screening April 2 at the William P. Hobby Airport, the agency said.

The unusual size and nature of the lump prompted additional inspection. An agent asked for it to be unwrapped and the traveler insisted it was just a burrito. The agent again requested the passenger open it. Once open, the agent noticed something dark and unusual inside it. A supervisor was called over and they ran the burrito through the X-ray again. The second screening revealed what appeared to be black tape and dark wrapping around a “large organic mass.”

“Breakfast burritos are delicious but officers were surprised to find crystal meth inside the one pictured,” the agency wrote on social media.

The Houston Police Department was notified. They arrived, tested the substance concealed in the food and determined it was crystal meth, officials said in a news release.

“Although (Transportation Security Officers) don’t actively screen for illicit drugs at airport security checkpoints, they are required to contact airport law enforcement when they come across suspected drugs in carry-on luggage or on a passenger,” the agency said.

Police then arrested the passenger, who has not been identified.

“I commend the actions of our TSOs and supervisory TSO who noticed something wasn’t quite right and for acting on their instincts. Their attention to detail and follow-up response led to the discovery of crystal meth, a dangerous and illegal substance,” TSA Federal Security Director at HOU Hector Vela said in a statement.
