Virginia State Police told WTVR the chase started when a trooper saw a driver going 77 mph in a 55 mph zone. The car initially pulled over for the trooper, but as the trooper got out of his car, the driver made a U-turn and sped off.

State police say the trooper followed the driver, who continued speeding, occasionally going above 100 mph, WRIC reported.

The crash happened when the driver tried to take a left turn but crashed into the road’s median, WRIC reported. The vehicle hit several trees and flipped over before catching fire.

Police said that when the trooper approached the vehicle, he heard a baby crying. The trooper crawled through the shattered back window of the vehicle to rescue the child from his car seat, WTVR reported.

The trooper handed the baby off to a sheriff’s deputy who had also responded to the scene. He then stayed with the driver, who was seriously hurt in the crash, WTVR reported.

State police have not identified the driver, whom they said was treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries from the crash at the hospital. The baby also suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, WTVR reported.
