MURRAY, Ky. — Investigators said a man who killed a sheriff’s deputy in Kentucky before he was shot and killed himself used a gun he had hidden.
Gary Rowland, 30, had been brought in for an interview at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office when he asked to smoke a cigarette on May 16, The Associated Press reported. Rowland had been arrested approximately one hour prior on drug and firearms charges.
Rowland was being interviewed by Calloway County Chief Deputy Jody Cash, who was serving as part of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration task force, WPSD reported. Cash, along with Marshall County Deputy Donald Bowman, who was on the same task force, escorted Rowland outside.
Kentucky State Police told WDKY that while he was smoking, Rowland produced a handgun that had been hidden, shooting Cash. Bowman and another deputy then immediately returned fire, shooting Rowland, the station reported.
Both Cash and Rowland were taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, WPSD reported.
Cash worked in law enforcement for 22 years, spending eight years with the State Police and serving as assistant chief of the Murray State University Police Department fox six years before joining the Calloway County Sheriff’s Office, The Lexington Herald-Leader reported.
