STAMFORD, Ct. — Connecticut firefighters executed a daring rescue after two people became trapped when Monday’s nor’easter drove their vehicle into Long Island Sound.
Only the bed of the truck was visible after the pickup truck became submerged about 40 feet off the shore of Cummings Park, trapping a man and woman in the icy water, WABC reported.
The extreme winds, snow and tide continued to move the vehicle and cause it to fill with water, WPIX reported.
The woman was able to escape through the truck’s rear window and get to the exposed bed, but the man remained stuck inside the vehicle, WABC reported.
Members of the Stamford Fire Department ultimately stretched their tower ladder to capacity in order to reach the vehicle, and one firefighter managed to pull the man through one of the truck’s windows after the vehicle was completely underwater, WPIX reported.
The woman declined medical attention at the scene, and the man was transported to an area hospital with lacerations, WABC reported.
