Driver killed after car plunges 25 feet off North Carolina bridge

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A driver was killed Wednesday afternoon after her car plunged more than 25 feet off a bridge in Catawba County, North Carolina, troopers said.

It happened along Greedy Highway on the bridge over the Jacobs Fork River.

WSOC-TV learned the driver hit one side of the bridge, swerved across to the other side, hit the guardrail and plunged into the water below.

“I saw him hit the edge of the bridge right here. So I stopped and turned around. I didn’t actually see him go in the water but when I stopped and turned around there was no car,” witness McKenzie Croft said.

Firefighters forced the doors open to reach the driver inside, who died at the scene. Investigators identified her as 62-year-old Virginia Faye Rose.

A wrecker was called in to lift the car out of the water and back onto the bridge above.

Those who travel the road often said there have been other serious wrecks there before.

“It’s scary, man. People fly down this road like crazy. Especially right here because it’s narrow,” Croft said.

Troopers they believe Rose was possibly heading to work when the wreck happened.

They said she was not wearing a seatbelt, and speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
