Mattel announced Wednesday that it will honor singing legend Elvis Presley with a collectible Barbie doll, a move that coincides with Elvis Week 2021. The toymaker is banking on the popularity of both so that collectors will not be tempted to “return to sender.”

Presley died Aug. 16, 1977, at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 42.

The Elvis Presley Barbie Doll will feature the toy with a large ponytail pompadour, Barbie will be wearing one of Presley’s 1970s era “American Eagle” jumpsuit that included rhinestones, a cape and a red scarf. Presley wore the jumpsuit during numerous concert appearances, Mattel Creations said in a news release. The doll will cost $50, and there is a limit of two dolls per customer.

“When Elvis Presley emerged on the music scene, he introduced the world to his unique sound and signature moves,” Mattel Creations said in a news release. “Barbie honors the legendary ‘King of rock ‘n’ roll’ with an Elvis Presley Barbie doll featuring a slick pompadour ponytail and wearing an outfit inspired by his iconic ‘American Eagle’ jumpsuit.

“Like the original he wore during concerts, the outfit is emblazoned with red, gold and blue sparkling eagles, has an attached cape, red scarf, belt and bell-bottoms,” Mattel Creations said.

The doll also has white pointed-toe boots and a golden ring with turquoise accents, Mattel said.

It’s an outfit that collectors can’t help falling in love with.

It is not the first collaboration between Mattel and the Presley estate. In 2008, Mattel released the “Elvis and Priscilla Barbie Doll Giftset,” a 1996 offering that presented dolls of Presley and his bride. In 1997, Mattel released the “Barbie Loves Elvis” doll, which spotlights Presley in a gold jacket and black pants while holding a guitar. Barbie is dressed in 1950s garb and appears to be seeking an autograph.
