The cuts said to be temporary will begin on July 1 and account for about 12% of the company’s 425 flights from Newark, according to CNBC. The cuts will not result in United leaving the cities it serves, instead, it will affect the frequency of flights in those markets.

United said the move was to address congestion during the summer travel season, Reuters reported.

The FAA had granted United permission to cut flights from Newark on a temporary basis on June 17 after the company asked for a waiver, citing construction and staffing at air traffic control.

United’s chief operations officer Jon Roitman said the adjustments “should help minimize excessive delays and improve on-time performance,” Reuters reported. Roitman said United, however, had enough planes, pilots, crews and staff needed to support its current Newark flight schedules.

News of United’s flight cuts comes days after American Airlines announced plans to pull out of four cities in the U.S. The plan will result in Dubuque, Iowa, losing all air service, CNBC reported.

Delta Airlines has also announced plans to decrease service by about 100 flights in the U.S. and Latin America this summer.
